As a homeowner, you are responsible for the upkeep of your home. An often overlooked part of a house, however, is the foundation. Arguably, it is one of the most important aspects of your residence, as it supports the entire structure.

That said, foundation issues aren't just cosmetic—even minor issues can lead to serious structural problems over time. For this reason, knowing the important components of your home's foundation will help you better understand what keeps your house strong and stable.

The Footing

The footing is the base of your foundation that supports the structure. Typically made of concrete, it is wider than the rest of the foundation. The footing evenly distributes your home's weight (the vertical load caused by gravity) across the soil, helping to prevent the building from settling, shifting, or sinking.

The footing base must be poured below the frost line to prevent the freeze-thaw cycle from compromising the foundation's stability. Frost lines can vary by jurisdiction in Alabama, but generally, footings can be placed more shallowly here than in colder regions of the country.

Regardless, the footing is one of the most critical parts of the foundation, as it directly interacts with the soil.

The Stem Wall

The stem wall is the vertical concrete section sitting on top of the footing. Reinforced with steel, it provides essential support to the structure. The stem wall forms the crawl space or basement, helps resist horizontal or lateral movement caused by soil pressure, and distributes vertical loads effectively. By providing this stability, it plays a key role in keeping your foundation secure.

The Slab

The slab is another vital part of the foundation. It forms the flat, horizontal surface that is your home’s floor. In slab-on-grade homes, the slab rests directly on the soil. For homes with basements, the slab serves as the basement's ceiling. It is important for the slab to be level, as this allows the weight of the structure to be evenly distributed across the foundation.

Drainage System

A properly functioning drainage system is essential for maintaining a solid foundation. Water can cause extensive damage by weakening the foundation, which may lead to cracking or shifting of the concrete. Most foundations include perimeter drainage systems (also known as footing drains) designed to collect and divert water away from the home. Keeping this system clean and well-maintained is key to protecting your foundation from water intrusion and damage.

When Should You Call a Professional for Foundation Repair?

Some signs you may need professional foundation repair include:

  • Stair step cracks in your foundation walls
